Annette Thomas is a Consultant Clinical Biochemist at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board with over 40 years experience in Laboratory Medicine, 20 years of which has been as Director of Weqas. Annette is Director of Point of Care testing (POCT) at Cardiff and Vale UHB, and is the National clinical lead for POCT representing Poct in Welsh Government advisory Committees and chairs the All Wales” POCT Co-ordinators Network. She is the current chair of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Committee on Analytical Quality and is a member of the European Federation in Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Performance Specifications for EQAS.

She has previously held posts on the Executive Board of the European Committee for External Quality Assurance Programmes in Laboratory Medicine, chair of the All Wales Clinical Biochemistry Group, chair of the National Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Audit Committee in the UK, a member of the Association of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Scientific Committee and a member of the Royal College of Pathologists Scientific Advisory Committee on Clinical Biochemistry. In 2019, EQALM honoured Annette by presenting her with the Adam Uldall award for the work she has done in the field of EQA. Annette was also awarded the Welsh Government Lifetime Achievement Award at the Advancing Healthcare Awards 2019.
